During stormy weather, after all the nets were mended, they began making handicrafts from discarded shells. Capiz shells, or Jingle Oysters grow like weeds in shallow sea beds. Before the fishermen got creative, they were only collected for the meat and the shells were discarded. Now nothing is wasted. Our capiz chimes are made up of a stunning array of shapes and colors. They sparkle in the light, and when placed outside, create a gentle tinkling of the shells.
Our supply comes from two fishing villages in Java, where our shell artisans sustainably harvest the shells and shape them. All parts of the capiz (jingle oyster) are used; the meat for food, the shell for handicraft, and the shell waste for fertilizer. Only full-grown shells are picked from the kelp beds, providing more space and food source for the young ones to grow.
These wood-top chimes are made in a Javanese artisan village.
